"Poor care in Royal Gwent Hospital"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My uncle was admitted to A&E on Monday morning with poor kidney function, unable to breathe, he had oedema to his legs and arms. He was seen and transferred to the ward on Tuesday. On Saturday I visited and he seemed worse than on Friday night, struggling to breathe, so I asked the nurse who came to change his I. v. why this might be. As she was explaining to me why, she noticed that his catheter had been switched off to monitor his input and output and had not been switched back to 'open' so that his urine could flow into the bag.

On Monday I went to see him and while I was there the porter came to take him down for an x ray. Porter brought oxygen with him, as he is hooked up to oxygen. The porter noticed that although he was hooked up, there was no oxygen. This was at 8pm. I made sure that he was re-attached when he came back, but this does seem to me like rather basic nursing that is being missed. In general he seems to be well looked after, notes are taken, but I am really worried about these mistakes which have been randomly picked up - it feels as though these things could make a big difference to someone who is in his 80s and so poorly.

Hello Buffy,

I'm sorry to hear about the problems your uncle has been having. If you send an email with your address to nick.thomassymonds.mp@parliament.uk then we can discuss how to take this further.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Yasmeen
