"A and E and Neurosurgery!"

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

Sataday morning my partner took me to Warwick hospital, who were excellent and ambulance me over to Coverntry hospital with suspect Caudia Equine Syndrome-a rare thing, where your slipped disk presses on another group of nerves, its a medical emergency, if the disk isnt removed from the nerves asap you can end up incontinent for life. I expected another wait for Coventry. The staff were excellent, got to the root of the issue, but i was laid waiting in a corridor due to lack of space. The staff agreed with Warwick, i did have Caudia Equine, and put me down for the next slot in surgery. The A and E staff were excellent! getting me straight to the MRI scanner, the porters were lovely! I went back to one of the rooms in A and E instead of the corridor, was checked on regularly, given a catheter. I was moved to a ward, a doctor came and told me what needed to be done, which i agreed. They couldn't give me a time scale as to when i would be in surgery though, last minute i managed to ring my partner and let him know i was going in at 9pm! The staff once again were brilliant and next thing i new i was waking up at 3pm. Then things got a little shoddy, no one could tell me how the surgery went, what i was to do or anything. I could not sleep, and the pain kicked in despite morphine. only next morning 8 am did someone tell me how it went-well!! The huge disk had been decompressed and sorted. I was unable to get up and move though, very annoyed when they removed the catheter-although i knew they had to to make sure i had normal bladder function. it was agony! the nurse was lovely though, helped me up, down, and gave me pain medication to suit. In a room on my own which was much needed. The drip came out, next morning, saw a physio who was useless! only made sure i can walk up and down stairs! I was told i had to go and it in the discharge lounge to wait for my TTOS,they needed my bed! Despite being told to sit no longer than 5 minutes! At this point, things got bad. They gave me paracetamol, ibrufen and small amount of codine to go home with. No where near the pain medication i had been on that day, i just had my back cut open and i wouldnt last the night on that. they said "sorry, our pharmacy is shut now, speak to your gp!" my gp was shut! I'd waited 2 hours for TTOS! i was agony, all night crying at home. my gp was furious when i turned up at 8 am-they hadnt even given me the right amount of paracetamol! The doctor gave me what i needed, and sent me home. i have 17 staples in my back, and no appointment to have them taken out! this discharge procedure is shocking! I had already seen a private consultant the week before who said i need this surgery on the NHS asap and should have had it months ago! NHS were letting me down! despite emergency referal to UH! only when my bladder stopped working did anyone help me-despite knowing i was on the brink of CES anyway! whole system is flawd! least my sciatica is gone from both legs and can walk after months!

Dear Charlotte,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience at University Hospital, Coventry.

I am pleased to hear that you had a good experience in our A&E and that our staff were excellent during your operation.

However, I am very sorry to hear that you had such a distressing experience after your operation, and following your discharge, as these are not the standards which we aim to deliver for our patients.

I would like to apologise for your experience, and that you did not receive enough communication about the discharge process and when your operation was expected to take place.

I have sent your comments to the Modern Matron for Neurosciences.

She has said that our discharge advice is individual to each patient.

However, we routinely inform patients to contact our ward staff if they are in pain after being discharged, and so I am very sorry if this was not the case in your situation.

Our Modern Matron has also said that it is unusual for us to reduce a patient’s pain relief on the day of discharge, and would urge you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), so that we can look into your concerns further.

You can contact the PALS team on 0800 028 4203. If you would prefer to contact us by e-mail, our address is feedback@uhcw.nhs.uk
