"Chemo ward 3-4 hour wait times"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

My mother is undergoing her sixth round of chemotherapy, While the doctors and nurses are lovely,The wait time is excessive i cant belive that if you attend A&E with a possible break or sprain to the hand or foot, theres a breach time of 4 hours, however if your a chemotherapy patient waiting chemo you can sit around waiting in the waiting room foe 4,5,6 hours, appointments are never on time, and for those who are wheel chair bound you wouldent dear leave them on the chemi ward alone, as your relative would not get toileted, Basically you must fight every visit to be seen within a hour from your appointment time, and its not unusual for older patients who visit the chemo ward alone to be sat waiting at 4.00 pm for what should have been a 9.30 am appointment, the usual excuss is the lab havent sent the chemo!

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your mother’s experience at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

We are very concerned to hear about the experience you describe as this falls short of the high standard of care we aim to provide. The Matron for Oncology has provided these comments;

‘The Chemotherapy service has experienced an increase in referrals to the unit and the wider team are working hard to increase our capacity on both the unit and in the Pharmacy Sterile Laboratory where the chemotherapy is produced. This will reduce unacceptable delays on the day for patients. We would like to reassure patients and relatives that nurses are available to assist the patients to the toilet if required’

The Matron is also very keen to speak to you directly to discuss your concerns and take the necessary actions to resolve them. If you are happy to do this please make contact as soon as possible via the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) who will be pleased to put you in touch with the relevant senior staff.

PALS can be contacted by phone 0121 371 4400, by email PALS@uhb.nhs.uk, via the hospital website www.uhb.nhs.uk/pals-form or in person by dropping in between 9am – 5pm (Mon-Fri) to the PALS office located near the Information Desk in the main entrance of the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
