"Mixed A and E experience"

I recently attended monklands a&e department as I had a wound on my foot that became black and numb. I was very concerned about this as many reasons behind it were running through my head! The triage nurse in a&e was, in my opinion, rather short and abrupt with me, made me feel like I shouldn't be there, I always ask myself 'is it an accident or an emergency? ' And I had argued with myself whether or not to go but decided that when a wound turns black and numb it is an emergency! Following triage I proceeded to cubicles. There I met a lovely very welcoming dr who shared my concern! The nursing staff and student nurse within cubicles were also very friendly and chatty, they made me feel relaxed and reassured me as much as possible despite them being clearly concerned. I was given iv antibiotics quickly, sent for an X-ray and had an ortho review in a very timely manner.

I was then transferred to ward 10 where the staff were equally as welcoming and concerned. The nightshift staff were very quiet in going about their work which is sometimes not the case! All staff within ward 10 were very friendly and genuinely caring. Although they are very busy and have conflicting demands I could see how much the stuff nurse and csw (Claire and Shona) loved their job and how much they liked to interact with her patients!

The only let down was the consultant  who I think was very abrupt with the members of his 'entourage' speaking in a derogatory manner to them at times, and was also very insensitive with another patient within the room. They spoke over me and did not appear interested in my care as I was 'not an ortho problem'

Overall the care I received was excellent despite the grumpy triage nurse and arrogant consultant! ! !
