"Hernia Repair"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary

Had an open hernia repair on the 14th of June. Would like to thank all staff in the elective treatment centre for a fantastic experience at the MRI. Waiting time was around 2 months from the date I was diagnosed by my Gp - an excellent service. Surgery was a success and I now fully on the road to recovery all thanks to the hard work of the staff that looked after me. I was treated at all times with dignity, care and respect. Attended a few appointments here prior to the actual operation and parking is easy, correspondence is quick and efficient and all staff I encountered where friendly and helpful. Only constructive feedback I could provide was that I did not receive much advice about caring for the wound after surgery, perhaps I missed a leaflet somewhere. Overall, a great experience I have every faith in the hospital should I ever need to return.

Thank you for your comments posted on the NHS Choices website regarding your care on the Elective Treatment Centre at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. It was very kind of you to write and compliment the team in the department, as it is good to receive positive feedback which reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff. We are pleased to hear that you are recovering well and we will ensure that your comments are passed on to the staff on the Elective Treatment Centre

Please accept our apologies that you did not receive sufficient advice in respect of caring for your wound following your discharge. The usual procedure would be for patients to be provided with a booklet during the pre-operative assessment stage, which gives basic information regarding wound care on discharge. The nursing staff should also reiterate this advice and give further specific advice as required and this would usually be done during the discharge procedure. We apologise if this was not your experience on this occasion, this feedback will also be passed onto the Ward Manager of the Elective Treatment Centre to be shared with the team, as it is important to ensure that we improve our communication with patients at discharge.

If you have any outstanding queries about your after care please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk. Who will be able to arrange for you to speak to a member of the nursing staff on the Elective Treatment Centre.
