"Monklands Hospital"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Ear, Nose & Throat (Ward 9)

My dad who is in his late eighties was admitted to ward 9 for an operation. The last few times he has had to have an operation it has resulted in him having to have a catheter inserted due to urine retension.

At around 8pm the symptoms of urine retension started, because he was a bit unsteady on his feet a nurse offered to help him to the toilet and promised to come back and take him back to bed after half hour of waiting nobody came back my dad had to struggle back to his bedside. Around hour and a half later my dad struggled round to the Nurses station to ask if a doctor had been called as he could not pass urine only to be told all the Doctors were busy my dad explained he was in a lot of pain and the Nurse offered him and gave him pain killers he was told someone would come to insert a catheter another hour pass before eventually a Nurse came in to do this 3 Hrs after the symptoms started.

My dad feels he went through an ordeal and he felt the Nurse did not listen to him. The next morning just before 9am I phoned the ward I was told the Doctor was doing the bed rounds I said I would phone back at lunch time asking the ward to phone me should my dad Be getting discharged before then, the ward phone me at 11. 10am to tell me that my dad was being discharged 5 minutes later my dad phoned me to ask what was keeping me from picking him up it appears he was told at 9am he could get home and was told by the Nurses that they were waiting on me calling them back. I work in the Nhs and feel sad that my dad was treated like this it has made my dad not trust going back into hospital. My dad feels he was not treated properly and was left in pain for hours.

He is still a bit distressed with the night he spent in hospital and the way he was dismissed by the Nurse.

My dad may be in his eighties but he is fully aware of how busy and under pressure nurses in the NHS are, but on this occasion he felt he was not afforded the dignity and respect he deserved by not being listened to.

Thank you for taking the time to post your experience of Monklands Hospital, which has been far from satisfactory. Please be assured these are not the standards we aspire to. Your posting will be shared with the ward staff in Ward 9 with regards to you dad's experience around his care, communication and feeling of not being listened to.
