"Poor nursing care"

About: Morriston Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

I work as a nurse myself, and never have I felt so disappointed and let down by my fellow nurses. I received a phone call from my brother to say that my mum, also a nurse had been taken into hospital. I work in Croydon London, it was the middle of a shift. My mum was taken into A&E at 4PM, I drove 6 hours from London to Swansea due to traffic and having to stop for a rest. By the time I reached the hospital, I found my mother in her bed, crying, whilst nurses walked past her and ignored her. My mum has an autoimmune disease, so she lives with some sort of pain on a daily basis. I then found out that my mum had not been given any pain medication, no one had given any reason as to why her medication was being withheld. She had not been given anything to eat, and she was not told if a surgical house officer was going to come and review her, meaning that she would be Nil By Mouth.

When I found the nurse that was looking after her, she told me that she was coming with the medication. Nearly two hours later, the nurse didn't bring any medication. My brother drove from Moriston back to Penllergaer to pick up my mum's medication from home, which she took. Following this the nurse came to 'check' on my mum, having not done so for three hours. She decided to berate my mum about taking her medication, stating that 'the doctor didn't want you to take anything'. We told the nurse then, that we are nurses also, we would never allow patient's to go so many hours without pain medications, without food, without water. The nurse was giving excuse after excuse, we took her name and told her we were going to make a complaint as we felt that she was not giving good care to patients, not only my mum but other patients. Every time we found her, she was at the nurses station chatting with other nurses. Absolutely unbelievable! I just wanted to raise this issue, as I wonder what happens to other patients, especially those without families that work in healthcare, and know what standard of care should be given. It's absolutely appalling, I would not even leave a dog in the care of that particular nurse.
