"Confusion linked to Care through Opthalmology"

About: Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital

I lost 50% of the vision in my left eye on 7th May this year.

On 9th May I attended my opticians as the sight had not returned.

After two hours and thorough examination nothing could be found to be wrong so a call was made to the Consultant at the Ophthalmology department at DPOW as the optician was concerned and wanting me seeing as a matter of urgency.

The consultant advised that a referral would need to be made through the GP and could not be made directly by Specsavers.

I left and went straight to my GP who referred me on 12th May as an Urgent request.

I have just called the Ophthalmology Department to chase up my referral on the recommendation of my GP.

I have been advised that the consultant wont see me as an urgent and has put me on the 18 weeks waiting list as I was referred through Primary Care!

This was what they told Specsavers to do when they spoke to the consultant.

I have been nearly 8 weeks without my full sight.

I have had a CT Scan and an MRI and nothing has been found.

How can the consultant advise the correct route for an urgent referral and then override the urgent referral due to the route that they have advised needs to be taken for an urgent referral?

I am due to see my neurologist on Tuesday 5th July and the hope was i would have been seen prior to this to establish if there had been any damage to the optic nerve or if optic neuritis was a possibility.

I now have to go back to my GP to ask for an expedite letter so that this can be speeded up.

Its very upsetting and is causing a delay in my diagnosis.
