"Aberdeen maternity hospital"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital

(as a relative),

My sister went through a very traumatic induction and labour of her beautiful baby. Following this the pressure that was put on her to breast feed was shocking! Baby wouldn't latch on, no matter what they tried. Lots of people were sent in to try without taking into consideration how my sister felt that baby couldn't latch on and made her feel very low. To walk in and see your sister inconsolable due to this makes you very upset and angry. The nhs have targets to meet in regards to breast feeding but are you forgetting about the people that you are caring for? ! I thought that person centred was meant to be an important aspect? Obviously not in this case.

You are correct that the NHS has breast feeding targets to meet, but this should not be at the expense of causing such distress to a new mum. I am so sorry that this happened. We will make sure that staff at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital see your feedback. I am sure it will have an impact on them and how they think about their jobs.

It is important for us to take on board when we get things wrong and to learn from that and so I thank you for taking the time to post your feedback.

I hope your sister and her baby are doing well now and that there has been no lasting effect on them.

If your sister would like to get in touch to share more details of her story she can do so by calling me on 01224 567900 or by email at loldroyd@nhs.net
