"Ignored and had to beg for help with pain"

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital

Scribed by spouse for patient still on admission:

I have been here two nights now with severe pain after surgery last week. On arrival, I was in a very bad way and fell to the floor while rolling in pain. I was ignored for an hour until one of the staff came and told me I had to get off the floor if I wanted any pain relief. Afterwards I asked for something to help me go to sleep and kept asking all night from 11pm to 4am when I was given something.

They were going to discharge me the next day even though I was still unsettled and in pain! We had to dispute the decision which they eventually agreed with!

Today the doctor saw me in the morning and asked the nurses to put me on IV and more pain killers. By 2 pm nothing had happened. When I asked about it I was informed the doctor did not write this down anywhere so they couldn't do anything. I also had to beg and beg until I eventually got morphine for the pain.

For the two days and nights I have been here my sheets have not been changed, my sick was left in the sick bowl on my bedside trolley for a whole day which my wife tidied away with the other medicine cups all lying around.

It is pointless pressing the call button because they take their time to come and when you ask for help with pain you get ignored and you have to ask several times before anyone comes round to help you!
