"Excellent care from consultant and specialist..."

About: Cumberland Infirmary

Since being referred to the rheumatology department back in March 2014, I have had consistently excellent care from both my consultant and specialist nurse.

From my first meeting with the consultant they have always put me first, and asked about my symptoms and other issues that could be related. Their questioning and medical investigations have been thorough, and they've taken the time to explain what the tests are for and how the results would be used to help treat me. The consultant always had time to discuss any questions I may have about my condition, or wider issues surrounding it, and that has helped me understand how things may progress in the future which has allowed me to start developing my lifestyle around that.

My specialist nurse has been equally brilliant. Although I probably see them less than the consultant (we normally just bump into each other in the hospital atrium!) we have very regular contact. I have an "open line" to contact the nurse when I need to, whether it be for routine test results or for other advice.

What's been great is that the consultant and nurse seem to work very well together, and this has really benefited me and my health. They are both professional and have worked hard for me - thank you.

Having had consistency of care from the same consultant and nurse has been very good, as they now know me and my condition well, and I know them well enough that it feels like managing my condition is a "team effort".

They also interact well with other parts of the NHS, such as my doctor's surgery and physio, so I don't feel like there is the risk of things "falling between the cracks" when these situations arise.

In addition to the clinical aspects, the admin arrangements (both from the hospital centrally and rheumatology department specifically) have always been quick, efficient and no-fuss. Just what you need.

All in all, I have had an excellent experience of the rheumatology department and hope it continues that way for many years to come.

Thanks to all involved.
