"Stroke recovery"

About: Udston Hospital University Hospital Hairmyres

(as the patient),

I was in my forties when I suffered a stroke in 2014. Unconscious for 3 days and when I woke up I was blind in my right eye and unable to move any of my body on the right hand side. This meant I couldn't even sit up. I thought that was how I was going to be for the rest of my life. However Dr Yip and the staff of ward 13 in Hairmyres started me on my road to recovery. I got my sight back after a month and I got out of hospital 9 weeks after the stroke. I then had Physios from Udston Hospital visit me in my home 3 times a week. They were excellent, especially Paul M who kept my spirits high by talking to me as a person, not a victim. Thanks Paul.

Due to my desire to get back to work I was wheeled (I was in a wheel chair) up to the TRAC team at Udston. The Physios there (the wonderful Moira and Rosilyn) changed my life. They got me out of the chair and walking. They had plenty of patience and knew exactly how to provide me with the appropriate treatments that were tailored to get me where I am today. They listened to what I had to say, and by that I mean they really listened. Such a rare talent they both have. Anyway, they have had me walking through the woods (on a path) without even using a stick, driving a car again and back full time to my work.

I genuinely cannot praise highly enough the work of Moira and Rosilyn. They have allowed me to get my life back. I hope the managers at Udston realise the wonders that they both work.

I can now look forward to the rest of my life with my wonderful wife and two sons. Thanks to all who helped me get to here. I am forever in your debt.

Dear 'The Changingman',

I was delighted to read of your such rewarding experience. My personal role has me dealing very closely with Dr Yip and her team within Ward 13 at Hairmyres, and I know how hard they strive to deliver the excellence you have described. I will be sure to pass on your comments as im sure they will be most appreciative.

Your comments about the value of "talking to me as a person" and "they really listened" are especially prominent for me, because these are values the whole of lanarkshire's services are being developed around. It is great to read that these values made an impression on you whether you were in the hospital, out in the community when you were visited by the Udston Physio's or finally attending the Udston TRAC team.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us. You have been very complimentary to our team, but I feel I should congratulate you also. Clearly, your own hard work and determination has been a major factor in your progress... and I'm delighted for you. I hope you continue to keep well.
