"Discharge from AMU"

About: King George Hospital

My 94 year old mother was discharged from the Acute medical unit after a short stay following an MI and TIA.

The ward was very keen to discharge her and promised medication would be available when my mother was sent to transport.

She was discharged without her medication and I had to return the following day for it.

On my arrival it still was not ready.

I worry for patients who do not have a good home or back up support and are unable to speak out for themselves.

In the Departure lounge two particular members of staff could not have been more caring when trying to help with this medication problem.

Mum was sent to Departure Loung at 1800hrs when Pharmacy closes at 1700hrs. These two very professional and hard working nurses did there utmost to assist us and I would like to thank them on my Family's behalf.

Thank you for your comments regarding your mothers discharge. I expect patient’s medication to be available for them when they are discharged from our hospital. I recognise that this does not always happen but patients and families should be made aware of when we cannot achieve this and agreement made regarding returning to collect medication. I will make sure that your mother’s experience is passed on to the Division for their information. I was pleased to read of the two staff members who helped your mother during this time. If you know their names it would be lovely to pass your thanks to them directly. If you have this information please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk who will take the details.

Yours Sincerely

Kathryn Halford

Chief Nurse
