"Very caring, responsive team"

About: Kent & Canterbury Hospital / Kent Oncology Centre

(as a relative),

My 85 year old father is currently undergoing a 4 week course of daily radiotherapy at Kent and Canterbury Hospital. He is 2 weeks into his course of treatment. In the past fortnight he has developed mouth pain, which his GP diagnosed as oral thrush, and has been treating with anti-fungals.

Recently, my father attended Kent and Canterbury for his radiotherapy. As a result of the pain in his mouth, and a recent episode of gastritis he has not been eating and has lost a lot of weight. The dietitian saw him without an appointment, and she was concerned about the pain in his mouth (he is receiving radiotherapy to his face). The consultant went out of his way to see my father, and examined his mouth and tongue. He was worried about what appeared to be a long-standing ulcer under his tongue. He explained to my parents that he did not think the ulcer was malignant, but that he would need to take a biopsy to make sure. He arranged for the biopsy to be taken straight away, and advised that my father should visit his dentist as an emergency.

The care and responsiveness of the team was excellent. All of the clinical staff were very reassuring and helped my mother who was worrying about whether she would get a parking fine since her parking permit had expired. A member of the team helped my mother find a parking attendant and explained about my father's treatment.
