"Poor Disabled Access"

About: Southmead Hospital

Whilst the ability for disabled patients to park free is much appreciated, the climb uphill from the main multi-storey car park to the Brain Centre when pushing an adult in a wheelchair is unacceptable, especially as you have to navigate across multiple kerbs & road crossings through a never ending building site. It is also unfortunate that patients are now seen in a large communal room for blood tests & examinations, which lacks dignity and privacy.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your views of the disabled access to the Brain Centre. I was only alerted to your post yesterday and so I am sorry I have not replied before now. I apologise that the access is difficult at present and that this led to you having a poor experience. I also regret that no member of staff was alerted in order to assist you, or advise you of the alternatives. Please be aware that in a couple of months the building work you witnessed all around the Brain Centre will be complete and the new patient car park will be available with direct access to the main hospital concourse. However, importantly this will also allow the Brain Centre to be accessed on the level by crossing the new central green space being created outside of the main hospital entrance. This can be seen from the illustrations provided on the Trust website at:

If you wish to understand the other options for parking and access to the Brain Centre please ask staff, or contact the team here on 0117 414 4569 and we can advise you.

Kind Regards – Steve Sykes
