"Payment to recieve results of my blood tests"

About: St Thomas' Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

I was recently hospitalised and during that time, the hospital took blood on several separate occasions for extensive testing.

I asked repeatedly to be told the results and was repeatedly told that someone will be along to discuss them.

After 3 days this had not happened and I left hospital. I wrote asking for copies of the tests and the hospital is now demanding payment for these!

This is outrageous; the results should have been communicated to me in hospital. At no time prior to taking blood (or while I was in hospital) did the hospital tell me there would be a charge to find out the results. Indeed, I would not have consented to the tests had I known.

I refuse to pay on principle, but the fact I don't know the results is extremely worrying given my complex medical history and it means I am lacking information I need to manage my health.. This is downright irresponsible behaviour by the hospital and shows once again how revenue comes before all else.

Dear Waarheid, Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you did not receive your blood test results during your recent hospital stay and would like to apologise for this. If you would like to contact our PALS Team on 020 7188 8801 or via email pals@gstt.nhs.uk they can liaise with the relevant department to obtain your blood test results for you.

It's the PALS team that is demanding payment. This is exceptionally distressing as I need the results for continuity of care - I need to share them with my endo next week and the fact you are withholding them is having a direct effect on my care.

Dear Waaheid, Thank you for your comment. We would like to help you resolve the issue you have raised. I think there may have been a misunderstanding as the PALS Team do not process access to health records applications or payments. If you would like to call me on 020 7188 9080 to discuss this and try and arrange for you to have your blood test results in advance of your appointment next week. Best wishes, Sarah Allen, Patient Experience Manager
