"Long day but completely stress free and well..."

About: Royal Derby Hospital

Today I had my first visit to Royal Derby Hospital. I chose Derby, out of area, for a second opinion and it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. Starting with two very efficient and friendly phone calls a couple of weeks ago the day carried on with friendly and helpful people in the disabled car park and then into the hospital itself where everything was so calm and stress free.

The busy nurses in the blood test department were nonetheless, so lovely and gentle and managed a minute for a little chat while they checked I had stopped bleeding (despite having to put up with some people being less than polite).

Then onto the osteoporosis department where again everyone had a smile and was efficient and helpful. I can't speak highly enough of the consultant who spent a lot of time going through various results and even asking me if I had a preference for the way various things went in the future! The specialist nurse who had been in the consultation and who had arranged to phone me in a few weeks to see how my treatment is going, noticed that I was still sitting in the waiting room a few minutes after I had finished the consultation (I had been telling my husband what had been said by the consultant) came over to check that I was ok and that I was not worried about anything.

Unfortunately, over the past 20 years I have been both an in patient and out patient at several hospitals in three different counties both NHS and private. Well done Royal Derby, I did not feel remotely stressed when I got home today and in addition feel really confident under the care of the new consultant. I really hope I do not need to choose a hospital for anything else in the near future but if I do I know which one it will be.

Good Morning

It was very kind of you to take the time to write to the hospital; I am pleased to hear that you had a positive experience and that you wish to express your grateful thanks to the staff who assisted you in the disabled car park, the nurses in the blood bank and Rheumatology. I will forward your comment to the managers of the relevant departments to share with their staff and to the Chief Executive for acknowledgement.

We have a staff recognition scheme called the Pride of Derby award within the Trust which recognises staff who have gone that extra mile for their patients.

I will ensure that all staff involved in your care are nominated for the appropriate section of this award.

Thank you again for your kind comments and for taking the time to write.

Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).
