"My sister's husband died ..."

About: Hexham General Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

My sister's husband died suddenly and unexpectedly and we were advised by the police to go to the mortuary at Hexham where he had been taken.

Obviously this was an upsetting time for us both but the staff were lovely - particulary the person we saw in the mortuary though I can't remember their name. They treated my brother in law with dignity and respect and my sister felt she was leaving him in caring hands.

What could be improved

We might have missed it given the circumstances but could not see any signage on how to find the mortuary. Luckily the member of staff we asked was very helpful.

Response from Hexham General Hospital

Thank you for your comment posted on the Trust website concerning your late brother in law. Please accept the Trust’s condolences at this sad time. I will pass your comments onto the appropriate staff.

With regard to the signage, it is not usual for members of the public to go unescorted to the mortuary therefore this is the reason that there are no signs for direction. It is usual for the Police to contact the hospital to make arrangements for your sister to visit the mortuary. This would have enabled her to be met and escorted.
