"Ward 5"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

Mam was in ward 5 after fall about 2 week ago. When going to desk to ask to speak to someone about treatment etc staff continue talking and you feel invisible. Spoke to her nurse but they did not understand me so took a few attempts Her Dr was very nice thought. Parking is terrible, worse than last time as even more spaces are now for staff, very frustrating at evening visiting as loads of empty spaces as staff all gone home but you can't park anywhere. when visiting was told she could go, home 3.30 ish by 5 still no meds had to go out to put more money in for parking. 6. 20 still no meds took her home and eventually returned back to pick up 7.20 pm

What I am really unhappy about was on getting her bag from locker she was taken in with, noticed awful smell. Found her soiled nightwear in the bag with her coat, glad she was only in for a week ! Several notices around hospital re not visiting if poorly etc/ use hand wash for health / bugs etc yet this happens i think this up in unacceptable they should have been disposed of re issue of spreading bugs .

Dear Sue

Thank you for commenting on NHS Choices website on your recent experience of our services.

I am sorry to learn that our communication standards fell far short of our expectations when you were visiting your mother in Ward 5.

I note your comments regarding car parking and can assure you we continually review the allocation of staff and visitor bays, however, I will forward your comments to the respective manager to ensure they are not ignored.

With regard to finding your mother’s soiled nightwear in a bag in her locker, I apologise profusely that this happened, as I can assure you, that is not our usual practice.

I will copy your comments to the relevant managers of the service to ensure they are brought to the attention of the staff and that staff are able to learn from your experience.

In the meantime, I sincerely hope your mother is able to make a speedy recovery from her fall.

Kind regards

Steve Williamson

Chief Executive
