"All staff were helpful and courteous ..."

About: St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

(as the patient),

What I liked

All staff were helpful and courteous and appeared to work well as a team. The ward and adjacent communal areas were kept clean (Domestic duties seemed to be undertaken throughout the day) Medics were extremely attentive and thoughtful, procedures were carefully explained and executed as promptly as possible. There seemed to be many gripes about meals but I understand that the allowance is less than £2 per day per patient, in which case what they Russel up has got to be akin to the loaves and fishes and there is always a healthy choice available. must just put up with it being basic. Thank you St. Mary's.

What could be improved

I think that thought needs to go into the care of confused patients. I in no way mean this comment to be detrimental to any of the staff, who are fully stretched and do the best possible under the circumstances for these people. But their needs are many fold and more than the staff appear able to fit into there already busy routine. It is distressing for other patients to witness the agitation that these people experience and by far the worst is that the confused are not always getting the basic care that they need. Apart from a a specialist unit I have know idea how this problem can be solved, but I do feel that the situation needs addressing.

Anything else?

I have previously commented on the cleanliness of the ward but still feel there is room for improvement. As a patient leaves the unit I think a much more thorough sanitation of the area is called for. All in all more soap water and disinfectant.
