"Invitation to attend outpatient appointment"

About: University Hospital Wishaw

(as the patient),

I received an invitation to attend an outpatient appointment at Wishaw General today. The letter is obviously sent from a template and in my situation suggests carrying out procedures that are totally inappropriate for the week prior to appointment. I understand the need for easy to use systems for inviting patients to attend appointment and agree that template letters are usually the easiest way to do it but its not always the most person centred way to do so.

I now feel like a generic disease rather than an actual person. I am reluctant to attend my appointment as I now feel that the person I will be seeing will probably know nothing about my illness and I will spend half the appointment having to go over my 20 years history rather than discussing my previous year. Don't get me wrong, I will attend the appointment as according to the letter is will cost the NHS £136 if I don't!

Dear Lilac Gene Link

I am sorry our appointments letter has upset you I am not clear from your correspondence which specialty you attend but if you could contact our Patient Affairs Manager Yvonne Ross by calling 01698366558 we would be happy to look into the content of the letter to make improvements.

I do hope you attend your appointment and apologise you have been made to feel like a disease rather than a person. If you provide Yvonne with your details we can make sure the doctor in the clinic is aware of your history and that your time is not wasted.

Best wishes

Marion
