"One week wait for results of x-ray"

I recently followed the NHS teachings and avoided A & E when I suspected a fracture in my hand, instead I went to my GP and was referred to Falmouth Hospital for an x-ray. Imagine my surprise when I was informed that it would take one week to find out the results. Perhaps this is why people go the A & E. Very unsatisfactory especially as I use my hands typing each day on a computer and feel left in limbo and cannot provide people with information on whether it is fractured or not. Can I use my hand despite the pain or should I avoid doing so to lessen the likely hood of further damage. I am self employed and cannot afford to take time off work unless absolutely necessary.
