What I liked

The Theatre Admission unit was excellent, my Surgeon and everyone that was involved in my procedure and care afterwards were outstanding. I had to wait in recovery for a bed in HDU but was very well cared for. Once in HDU the care again was outstanding. I spent the night in HDU and was supposed to be moved to a ward. No bed was available so I stayed another night in HDU the care was second to none. The following day I was moved to Rowan ward. What a stark contast. I cant blame the nurses as there just were not enough of them. I was left to fend for myself, I had to keep asking to get my cathiter emptied, no one checked on me at all. I felt a nuisance. That night in my bay one of the elderly patients became very aggitated. She was wondering round at one point leaned over me and told me we were all going to die. I had to scream out when she took the drip down from the patient next to me and started sqeezing the bag. She was put back to bed several times but kept getting up. I had to call the nurses again when she was stood trying to pull out her cathiter. It ended up with a nurse sitting in the bay all night watching this elderly lady, who stood in the toilet lobby for hours refuseing help from the nurses and the Drs. I had no sleep at all, I was to scared to close my eyes.Next morning I was offered no assistance to get to the bathroom and wash nor even offered a bowl to wash at my bed. My surgeon had asked for my Cathiter to be removed early the next morning so as to get me mobile. I asked at about 11 oclock if this was going to happen. When the Surgeon checked back early afternoon it still had not been done. He was not happy. I left hospital the same day as I could not have spent another night in that ward.

What could be improved

Elderly patients need specialist care. Patients recovering from surgery need special care. Medical patients need special care. They should not all be mixed together as some are more demanding than others and then the care which is needed to ensure a full recovery cannot be given.
