"Rude nurse for an intimate test"

About: Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly

(as the patient),

I attended an appointment for a sexual health screen with a nurse at Plymouth University Health Service. The appointment was necessary due to the failing of protective methods of contraception which was obviously a very upsetting experience.

Actually requiring the screen, including intimate tests, was upsetting in itself but completely necessary.

The nurse who saw me treated me with nothing but judgement and made snide remarks about being stupid enough to have unprotected sex - if she'd cared at all enough to ask, I had done all that I could to protect myself. She made judgement on my partner and I feel that there was a serious lack of respect potentially due to being a student, along with being harsh when I failed to bring a urine sample (which I wasn't aware was required) and was even harsher when I failed to produce one at the surgery.

Although I'd done all I could to avoid needing the screening, my experience is more than enough to put me off seeking medical attention in future. The behaviour and attitude of the nurse made me feel disgusting and cry the duration of the walk home.
