I've had day surgery on my head that day.
There was one bandage put carefully on the wound. And another bandage over that: to protect me if I accidentally bumped into anything. Blood had seeped through to the outer bandage and down my head.
It was an emergency; and so my son, who was with me, contacted the District Nurses.
It took them an hour to get to my house. And in the meantime my son got quite agitated on my behalf. I imagined that they were just very busy; but they did turn up.
There is a group-photo on the site somewhere, which shows a group of smiling nurses. Let me tell you that the smiles they brought to me, were twice as large and very welcome!
They repaired the outer bandage skilfully, reassured me; then rushed off to their next case.
They left and I didn't even catch their names.
They do this day in day out; They run the risk of being underestimated. Yet this devotion to their duty happens all the time.
I remember their expertise; and their smiles most of all; and I'm grateful.
