"Is Principia doing a useful job?"

About: Nottinghamshire County Teaching PCT

(as the patient),

I have been consulted over two separate hospital appointments by Principia, having been referred by my doctor.

In both instances the appointments were changed by the hospital. Based on my limited experience, this agency appears not to be doing a useful job, but merely wasting money on another layer of bureaucracy.

Dear bahm I have looked into your referral to ascertain why your hospital appointments were changed. For both referrals we carried out the wishes of your GP. On both occasions it looks like when the hospital consultant reviewed the referrals they redirected you to a more appropriate clinic, this is fairly routine when a specialist reviews a referral. Principia Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) speaks to patients to discuss choice of providers and also to book hospital appointments for patients. Although this may appear to be yet another step in the process, it is a necessary step as it is not feasible for a GP to carry out all this work in a short consultation. We process approximately 400 referrals per week the majority of which go very smoothly, I’m very sorry if this wasn’t your experience. We welcome feedback, and continually review and streamline our processes. Principia was set up in August 2006 as a not for profit Social Enterprise which means that it is a business that delivers services for the local community within Rushcliffe by directly involving the local community. To get involved, with one of our various patient forums or to become a member of our Health Network, please contact me by email
