"Fantastic staff and menu poor..."

About: Southampton General Hospital

I was in the orpthepedic ward for 1 day/night.

Good points:

.

Nurses and doctors very friendly, accommodating, helpful and supportive

. Everything fully explained

. Menu fabulous

. TV and USB choices and availability to make your stay welcoming

. Bed v comfortable when I was tol how to operate it!

Bad Points

. Despite reporting there was a large quantity of urine Spread across the toilet floor (to the toilet door which people were standing in to get to the loo along with a dirty tissue) it was not cleared up by the night staff and was still there in the morning, which was at least 10 hours) this must have been walked on to the wards

. 2 out of 4 bathrooms were out of order

. Nurses having to constantly change adult nappies and bedding at night in the bay I was in, which prevented me having any sleep with the noise and disturbances

. While some night nurses were rushed off their feet, others seem content to doze off by their nursing point.

. It would have been good for someone to explain how you could rise and lower the beds, some of us haven't been to hospital for a v long time and technology has certainly changed!

. I appreciate the shortage of beds, but I was put in a bay (f3) which was an extension of an old peoples home, where their needs and requirements were far greater than mine, with patients with dementia shouting all day and wandering around the ward looking lost. This was no place to come to rest and get better.

I do believe that all of the above bad points are not a reflection of how hard the doctors and nurses work, but a result of cuts to the NHS and outsourcing repair work and lack of beds

Would I recommend this hospital? Hmmm, as far as the staff go, most definitely, they were fantastic! I would question the other points though.

Trust response

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay on F3. I am glad you rate the care you were given. Rest is an important part of recovery and it is unfortunate you did not experience this. It is a constant challenge to look after patients needs at night as well as providing a restful environment.

Your comments regarding ward cleanliness at night and your general feedback will be passed onto the ward to action. Thank you.
