"Wating room like a third world country"

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital

I had to visit the Walk In Centre on Sunday afternoon. I was shocked by the state of the waiting room. Whole rows of chairs had broken off their fixings and were missing. The floors were dirty and the toilets were even worse. As the wait was 3-4 hours people were sitting on the floor , including young children. There were discarded tissues, some blood stained in the three hours we were there no one came to clean the toilets or sweep up the mess on the floor. The smell of cigarette smoke in the waiting room was overpowering, people were standing just outside the doors smoking - I thought the grounds of the hospital were a non smoking area.

They were clearly understaffed in a&e , as I walked through to the walk in centre there was a young lady asleep on a trolley by the staff desk, a man in a wheelchair , covered in blood, was just parked up by the desk, there wasn't even a cubicle for him.

The good part is that the nurse I saw was excellent, I got my treatment and was treated very pleasantly.

Something needs to be done about the shambles that is now Dewsbury A&E/Walk in Centre. Its an absolute disgrace.

The walk in centre is provided and managed by Locala Community Partnerships, and not the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The A&E service, like most other acute providers, has seen a large increase in demand over the past few months, meaning that patients sometimes wait longer than we would like, which is regrettable. The hospital grounds have indeed been designated as non smoking, and staff do challenge patients who ignore this; current legislation only covers smoking in enclosed areas, however, and we are reliant on the cooperation of the public to a large extent.
