What I liked

This hospital has had it's day. The only step left is demolition and redevelopment. Start in the car park - if you can. When we went they were all full, one of us had to illegally park while the other was treated. It transpired that there were only three other pataients there at the time, so the car parks must have been full of staff cars. There is no public transport in Morpeth so a car is essential.

When you get into the hospital it is a maze of corridors that go on forever, up and down ramps, through heavy swing doors that haven't closed properly. The signs are awful and it is only by good luck that a member of staff came around the corner for directions.

Everywhere is old and scruffy. No doubt the poor cleaners try their best but it is a battle they cannot win. The place is worn out.

What could be improved

Demolish it quickly

Anything else?

Build a brand new cottage hospital for our County Town with at least double the existing parking, with minimal corridors (on the level) and easy access to all departments, and some basic signing

The redevelopment of Morpeth was consulted on in 2007 and NHS North of Tyne are currently finalising the plan for a new NHS centre in Morpeth. More information is available on their website – www.northoftyne.nhs.uk

We understand the frustrations regarding car parking. We have 63 spaces on the site which would normally be sufficient but there is currently a higher level of demand for spaces. This is because after the floods we relocated Gas House Lane Surgery to the hospital and this has increased the level of demand for spaces.

We took some measures to expand the available spaces which included arranging for our staff to park off-site and are sorry if this hasn’t alleviated the pressure as much as we had hoped.

There is a public transport service to the hospital and this was improved when Gas House Lane surgery moved to the site.

Although the hospital is old, there are plans to redevelop it and we have recently transferred some of the inpatient services into brand new facilities on the site. We will review the signage and see if we can make it better.
