"Treatment for my eyes has given me a cataract"

About: Essex County Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I have had treatment over the last couple of years for an eye problem called iritis (or uveitis). The treatment has been steroid drops. Although I was warned that the drops might cause glaucoma, I didn't know they could cause cataracts. But this has happened to me so I now need to have a cataract operation.

Anyway - my bad luck! But I would have liked to have been warned about the possibility. One problem has been that over the many times (about a dozen) I have attended hospital I have seen so many different doctors. It doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me when I have to tell my story to a new person every time.

One very good thing is the NHS Choices website. It has a fantastic and very clear video explaining cataract surgery. But no-one at the hospital drew it to my attention. Anyway - well done NHS Choices (not so well done the hospital - but I must say that with only one exception, I think the staff at Essex County have been really pleasant to deal with).
