What could be improved

My father was admitted to A & E and we got there a 6 am and was put on a ward at 4pm. He was not even given a pillow to put his head on. When I looked round hardly anyone In A & E had pillows, so I asked the porter if he could get some. He said they did not have any but would go and try and find some from another department. We were put on the William Harvey Ward. I have to say it was not very clean and there was no hand wash to do our hands as it was empty. I report this to the nurse who said she would get it changed. We asked if our father could have a blanket as he was cold and the nurse told us they did not have any more. I asked if she could find us one but she never came back. We asked another nurse who kindly got us one. My father had kidney failure and were told he was really ill. I was shocked when we came in the next day to find him in a state covered in blood and hanging out of the bed. he had not been given any fluid and we had to sit with him from 4pm to 11pm to get the fluid in him. It was only after this that he started to talk and come round. I questioned the nurses who were looking after him when we came. One of them said he was just biting the straw and the other nurse said she had been given him fluid. My brother-in-law shock the drink and said it was still full. Nurses should be trained to deal with this if a patient cannot drink. We just squirted the drink through the straw into his mouth. We asked to see his bedside notes so we could see what he had been given. The senior nurse was very rude to my sister and advised us we were not entitled to do this which we replied we were allowed to see these. Someone took the notes and we had to contact PALS who spoke to the ward and advised them we were allowed.

Anything else?

I was also upset that a disabled man who was calling out for a nurse was ignored. I was just about to go out and get a nurse when one passed my fathers room. I thought she was going to see the man who was still calling out, but went straight past where he was sitting and went into a store cupboard. I went down to her and asked why she had ignored him. She said she did not hear him. I asked her to go and see him as he could not reach his button as his wheelchair had been put at the bottom of his bed. Please make sure disabled people are treated with respect. We had to report a seriouse incident as the doctor/nurse did not know we were listening in. No incident form was filled in and we were not informed. We reported it to the ward manager who also did not fill a form out. We put our trust in these Doctors and nurses and if they hide something they deserve to lose the respect.
