"Treatment on discharge"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was left in waiting room waiting to be discharged for nearly 5 hours. When first sat down was told I had to wait for my medication, it was 11-45 and my last painkillers were at 8-30. After 2 hrs waiting I asked nurse in charge for painkillers. At 16-00 I was still waiting patiently but in pain, so I asked again for painkillers and what exactly I was waiting for. This was met by several confused looking nurses. I was given some painkillers, so I went to waiting room for some water to take them. I returned to the confused nurses and they had found my meds that had been sat waiting for me for some time.

Nobody for nearly 5 hours asked me if I was ok or if I needed anything. I did look directly at the nurses and made it obvious I was waiting to go for hours and got no response at all.

Dear A152,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on the Patient Opinion website.

I was dismayed to read of your experience and would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience or distress that has been caused.

I would also like to investigate this case further, to ensure we learn from your experience and hopefully, as a result, also make sure that other patients are not inconvenienced in the way you were.

If you would be prepared to e-mail me (Sharon.kidd@ulh.nhs.uk) with your full name, date of birth and, if you have it, your NHS number, I can obtain details of your episode of care and pass your comments on to the relevant team for review.

Once again, please accept my apologies, and thank you again for your feedback.

Regards

Sharon Kidd, Patient Experience Manager
