"Rheumatology Service"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Occupational Therapy University Hospital Wishaw / Rheumatology

(as the patient),

I was referred to Rheumatology within NHS Lanarkshire last year because of concerns about swelling and pain in various joints. From the very first visit to the GP, my experience has been extremely positive. I was offered an appointment with the Consultant Rheumatologist within four weeks. The appointment itself was a very positive experience: the Consultant listened with care and empathy, a thorough assessment was completed and I left with a plan for managing my newly diagnosed condition. In the subsequent three months, I have attended three further appointments with another Consultant, Dr Dale, whom I also find most courteous and helpful. All the staff I have met to date have been approachable, have listened carefully and gently and have demonstrated real care in their approach.

I have also met with Ms Fiona, Occupational Therapist, in Carluke Health Centre. I have attended two sessions with Fiona to date, which have been most helpful and informative. She has a lovely, gentle manner and took a great deal of time to learn about my life at home and at work and to consider how rheumatoid arthritis was impacting upon my functioning currently. I was also impressed with her pro-active approach to the management of this condition, and felt that Fiona took time to consider how I might prevent difficulties in the future, where possible. I hope to attend the group offered at some time in the next twelve months (this is not currently possible because of my own commitments, not because it was not offered sooner), but perhaps more importantly, I would feel very comfortable with telephoning Fiona for further advice or support should this be required.

All in all, this is a service that should be commended and an outstanding example of seamless, timely and holistic care within the NHS. At this time, my condition is in the very early stages and has responded well to the timeous intervention this team offered. Regardless of what direction this takes me in the future, I believe I am in very safe hands.
