"Still waiting for a response from GP"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I went to the GP in early December and was told I would need to be sent for a scan. Two weeks later I received a letter from the hospital telling me to get in contact with my GP, the original GP had filled out the referral incorrectly. Took two returns to the GPs to get another referral sent and have been waiting for over a month for any sort of response. One week short of four months later and I'm growing increasingly angry about the the doctors who are supposed to be helping. In the mean time my symptoms are getting worse, not to mention the additional stress of this on top of my final year of university.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear worsethanwhenistarted,

I completely understand your frustration here and would like to be able to help get this sorted for you. First of all, it would really help if we could confirm that your GP has sent off the referral now - you can check this with your GP directly, but it might also be an idea to ask to speak to the Practice Manager given the issues you have already had. The Practice Manager is responsible for the day to day running of the practice, and also deals with any complaints or feedback and so I think it would be beneficial to raise the problems you have had with them. Most GP surgeries have information online, and the Practice Manager will usually be listed in their staff list so you know who to speak to.

Your GP practice will be able to confirm that the referral has been made and should also be able to give you an idea of timescales. If they have made the referral, but are unable to give you any further information, then please get in touch with me directly to see what I can find out for you - my email address is lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. There are different timescales for referral for different clinics and conditions but if we can get you a bit more information and as least confirm that the referral is in place that might reduce some of the stress that you are feeling at the moment.

With best wishes,

Lorna
