"Nurses on the night shift"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted to EMU on in Jan 2010 where the level of care is excellent

in every way, this is second time I've been in EMU both times excellent care from everyone.I was admitted to CCU in Feb 2009 after Heart Attack again excellent care.

But in my opinion this care did not extend to the night shift on the ward I was staying on. I felt that the night shift nurses just couldn't be bothered and it seemed that everything was to much trouble. I was ok as I was able to get myself accross to toilet, but other ladies on the ward were older, one Lady opposite me was particulally destressed she is 86 yrs old and couldn't get her breath, I said to her press her Buzzer which she did but nobody came, her condition worried me as her face was really Red with Beads of Sweat on her Cheeks she was saying somebody please help me so I pressed my buzzer for her, eventually a nurse came, I said I had pressed my buzzer for the other lady so the nurse went accross to her and said she's ok she's talking to me,at which I protested how can she be all right, Can't you see how distressed she is, at which the reply was not much better.

Another night I went accross to the toilet quite late must have been about 11pm and asked if someone could turn off a Beeping sound from one of the Saline Drip things which had been going for ages and keeping us all awake and it wasn't even on our ward, but it had been going so long it was upsetting us all, well I was amazed to see the nurses sat talking around the Nurses Station quite unaware of this noise, one of them looked accross at me unperturbed and said what noise but she didn't get up, eventually someone did turn it off but certainly not in any hurry, this was the same carry on each night. In my opinion they we not doing the job they were paid to do and from my experience some of the nurses did not seem fit to be in the caring Job.

I must also point out that THE NURSES ON THE DAY SHIFT were EXCELLENT. They were pleasant and helpful to all. Nothing was any trouble, really exactly what you'd expect of Hospital in 2010

I'm sorry to have to write this complaint but felt so upset at how this lady was treated ,if it was your Mother how would you feel? and it wasn't just this lady there were two other ladies which were treated very much the same, I do hope this help's some other patient's entering this ward in near future.
