"Oxleas NHS trust mental health wards"

About: Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

I was told to come for an assessment at Oxleas house as I was in a crisis, after seeing a member of the HTT team I was told I would be being admitted in to hospital due to my risks. First I was told there are no beds there and that they were looking for another bed at a different hospital. I was happy about that as I have had very bad experiences on the wards at Oxleas house in the past.

20 minutes later same member of staff said you will be going to Maryon ward which is in Oxleas, I said you just told me there are no beds.

This is the second time this has happened once in 2014.

On entering the ward I was totally shocked at the staff attitude towards me I was receiving intimidating looks and made to sit waiting from 6 to 12pm in the dining area without a bed. I just wanted to sleep I was sat waiting for hours with nursing staff ignoring me and my call to see a doctor. I was then brought into a small side room/ office and told that there was no beds on the ward and they are still looking for a bed but I may have to go off the ward to sleep and come back tomorrow this could be on a elderly ward. This all while taking my laces out of my trainers or handing them over I said ok take the trainers as I do not want to be walking around without laces as this made me feel very distressed. I was then searched. I said I want to be discharged as there is no bed for me and before I was brought on to Maryon ward I felt they should have told me there was no bed here. I felt deceived into being admitted. I felt they had lied to me and was so angry from this point.

In the time I was waiting a very unprofessional male member of staff had entered the ward staring me out and giving me funny looks. I felt vulnerable and scared. After asking to bleep the doctor I was told by a very rude female member of staff to go and sit down. I was becoming increasingly frustrated and anxious. Around 11. 30pm I was told I will be going to avery ward next door because I didn't wan to stay on Maryon she said. I just wanted to feel cared for and given my room to sleep instead I was made to feel like nothing and nobody and patronised and provoked.

Around 10pm when they were giving out medication I said where is mine. As I was on antibiotics and hadn't had my next dose since leaving for the hospital. I was becoming very anxious about my health I was told I had to wait for the doctor. Doctor arrived around 11: 45pm and I was moved to the other ward and given my medication just before I was taken to the ward.

To my surprise the ward was very calm and very different to what I had experienced back in 2010. Things had improved slightly but I was then told I would be sleeping in a male corridor as there was no beds on the female corridor, by this time I was so tired I got into bed and fell asleep. However my night was not comfortable as there was males looking into my room through the glass window. I felt I didn't want to complain as my treatment might get worse.

I was told when I need to shower or use the toilet I had to walk over to the female part each time. No efforts ere made to find me a bed elsewhere on a female corridor anywhere in the uk.

I am disappointed and very angry that prisoners get treated better in prison. Also the food is not fit for humans but more like animals. The staff are very rude they stick together and sit in the office eating biscuits and sandwiches made for the patients. I caught a member of staff looking for curtains for her home on the hospital Internet.

Thank you for feeding back your concerns,

I'm very sorry that your care has felt to be this poor. I would like to speak to you directly to better understand this, and so that I can determine which staff I need to speak to about this. Could you contact me directly?

I appreciate that you might like to speak to me, or prefer to deal with this by email in the first instance; people can have different preferences and I'm happy to be guided by you. My email address is derek.tracy@oxleas.nhs.uk, and my phone number is 020 8836 8555.

Kind regards

Dr Derek Tracy
