"Going against patient's wishes"

About: NHS Borders

(as the patient),

I have an ongoing complaint re-my G. P practice & specific members of staff.

Today after been advised by NHS 24 I contacted my GP Practice for an emergency appointment as I have an internal abscess in my throat.

I always ask now who is on call & when I was told it was a GP I had complained about I said it would be inappropriate for me to see that same GP.

The receptionist said she would get this GP to phone me to which I told her under no circumstances did I want that to happen.

I suggested as it wasn't possible for me to see a different GP could she possibly ask a Doctor to refer me to the hospital, she agreed.

Three hours later my phoned went & it was the GP I have the ongoing complaint against, the same one I had stated I did not want to speak to.

I told the GP I found it inappropriate to phone me considering the circumstances & my wishes.

Long story short I was basically told they had no problem seeing me & if I didn't see them I wouldn't see any Doctor that day.

I still declined to the appointment.

Now as I see it the receptionist could have phoned me back & explained this was the only option, I would have accepted this & no to the appointment.

Am I wrong in thinking is unacceptable to go against a patients wishes?

Dear yve,

I am sorry to read about your recent experiences at your GP Practice. As GP's are independent practitioners concerns relating to the services they provide are investigated and responded to by the individual practice.

I would therefore encourage you to raise these matters with the Practice Manager at your GP Practice.

I did and it the response was if I wasn't prepared to see the GP I complained about then I wouldn't be seeing any Doctor..

I find it absurd that a GP who has lost a patients trust & knows this would insist on the patient sees them.

Nobody is more shocked than me that I have found myself mistrusting of Doctors now because of my GPs practice's .

I've always had an excellent relationship with my G.P s until I joined this practice. & I find the fact they have all the power during the complaints procedure, a patient has no say after they complain & that is so wrong.

This needs to change.

Isn't GPs employed by the NHS? Surely they must be regulated, they can't just do what they want.
