"Scottish Ambulance Services Vehicle"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a carer),

I am feeding back about an ambulance due to excessive exhaust fumes entering the interior while in transit. I believe this condition has been reported on a number of occasions by the ambulance crews that operate this vehicle and that all reports from your mechanics say there is nothing wrong with the exhaust system.

May I suggest that they check the exhaust tail pipe extends out with the footprint of the vehicle to ensure that no backdraught is causing exhaust fumes to be drawn in under the ambulance while in motion?

The patient being transported to hospital suffered loss of consciousness due to loss to blood oxygen saturation as a result of the levels of carbon dioxide within the vehicle. This was noted and monitored by both the patient's own breathing apparatus which was in use and the on board monitoring system of the vehicle

Dear bfrice

Thank you for sharing this story and I am sorry that it has taken a little while to reply to you.

I am extremely concerned to hear that a patient may have come to harm as a result of fumes from one of our ambulances. I would really like to investigate this further and so can I ask you to contact me so that I can try and get some details that will allow me to identify the vehicle in question?

In the meantime, I would like you to know that all of our vehicles have a rigorous service programme and when faults are detected they are removed from service immediately until repaired.

My contact details are: martinesposito@nhs.net or 0131 314 0003.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Take care

Martin.
