"A&E visit during a miscarriage"

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / Accident and emergency William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the William Harvey Hospital A&E following a seizure during a particular heavy bleed while miscarrying. I had been at the hospital most of the day in their EPU.

I was brought in by ambulance and there was a queue of 4 ambulances waiting to deliver patients. It was 8:30pm on a Friday evening and A&E was very busy.

I was quickly assessed by a charge nurse and advised I would be assigned a bed within 10 minutes. 1 hour later I was moved from a corridor to a gynae obs room and quickly put on a drip for pain relief and fluids.

It was obvious that there were not enough staff for the number of patients. That said, every member of staff I encountered that night was brilliant, understanding and caring. From the paramedics to the nurses and doctors, everyone listened and cared.

Yes, it would have been helpful to have pain relief administered within the hour of my arrival. It would have been better if I hadn't have had to lay in blood for three hours before I was examined. If there had been more staff on duty the department would have been able to cope.

The quality of the staff on duty was faultless and I am genuinely grateful to everyone who cared and treated me that evening.

I am so sorry that you had to experience this.

Please accept our heartfelt sympathies.

I am sorry that you had to wait a little longer than both you and we would have preferred and that you were not cleaned up quickly, but I am glad that the attention and treatment of the staff was so good. Thank you for your kind words about the teams which helped you. I hope that you recover well.

Best wishes for the future
