"Dentist rip off"

About: South Tyneside PCT

(as a relative),

My son is 20 years old and a full time student at University on his 3rd year of a degree. He did have a part time job until a few months ago, but as he is on his final year at uni, he left due to pressure of work.

He visited the dentist today as one of his molars needed some treatment. He has really nice teeth and asked if he could have a white filling so not to spoil the appearance. His appointment was for 20 minutes in total, the filling was successfully done, but the cost was £120!

The dentist explained that he would be treat as a private patient as white fillings to teeth other than front ones are classed as cosmetic dentistry. I can understand that, but surely he should only have to pay the difference between the NHS costs and the private costs? He has been told he needs another filling next week as the cost of £80.

By husband and I are left to foot the bill of £200 as he has no means to. He has a student loan, but books, travel and day to day living leave very little to spare. We are struggling with this, although our earnings are a little over the limit before we get any financial help, we have 2 other children, one with special needs and have a lot to pay out so our disposable income isn't very much.

Can anyone give any advice please?
