"Rehabilitation after brain surgery"

About: Nithbank Hospital / Rehabilitation

(as the patient),

I was referred to the Nithbank Rehabilitation Unit in Dumfries after brain surgery. I arrived at the unit feeling very vulnerable and apprehensive, but within minutes of arriving I was made to feel very welcome and put at ease. I've attended the rehab unit at Nithbank for the past 7 months and that warm, welcoming embrace was always there!

I had various health issues to overcome after surgery ranging from poor balance, dexterity, fatigue, emotional and mental upsets and the financial stress of being off work. The rehab team were able to offer me person-centred care by offering support, treatment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and advice tailored to all my needs and always with my wellbeing at the heart of their care. The service they provided was outstanding, invaluable and played a vital role in my rehabilitation.

They had a knowledgeable understanding of my post surgery limitations/capabilities and this helped them help me to set attainable goals, and for every new step I managed, for every goal I achieved - no matter how small - the rehab team were there offering me support and encouragement!

People often tell me how brave and strong I've been since surgery, and I can honestly say that I owe some of that strength and courage to the amazing care and support of the rehab team, when I felt low or weak they helped build me up physically, emotionally and mentally.

What an amazing team and an outstanding service, a true credit to the NHS!

The personal journey you have shared reinforces to us the importance of having the right community rehabilitation services in place to ensure patients achieve their optimum recovery, but also acknowledges the effort and perseverance you have displayed in moving forward after such a life changing experience.

You've reminded us that rehabilitation is about partnership working, supporting people to reach their goals way beyond the acute phase of their health care experience. It means so much to the rehab team to receive positive feedback such as this.

We all wish you the very best for the future, knowing that if things change you can get back in touch at any time.
