"Most horrific care given in the birthing centre"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I was in a few months ago having my baby boy and was disgusted at the care I received both during my labour, but particularly after. What's the point in spending all that money on a new posh hospital if you don't put enough staff in it to care for the patients?! Once my baby was born I was told to get up and have a shower but offered no support to help me do so and was then transferred to the post natal ward where I was ignored for the rest of my stay.

After leaving hospital I was diagnosed with an infection which I put down to the poor hygiene within the ward. I discharged myself after 1 night as I couldn't bare it any longer and knew my partner would give me better care than any qualified member of staff; at one point I waited over 4 hours for the paracetamol I asked for, just hours after giving birth.

I also received no support to help me breastfeed my baby, and this was my first born so I had no idea what I was doing wrong myself. If I hadn't of been determined to feed him myself then it would have been easier to just give in and give him a bottle as it was more convenient for staff on the ward.

I chose to go to this hospital as I expected a high level of care after seeing it all over the media etc for so long; well in my opinion they shouldn't have shouted about it as it was the worst care I've ever experienced and wouldn't go back there if you paid me. I have since heard similar stories from other women so if there is any pregnant ladies out there thinking of going to the birthing centre at this hospital, don't do it!!!!!!!

Dear Beth,

Firstly please accept my apologies for the delay in getting this response - I know I responded immediately last week but for some reason this has not been recorded on the NHS Choices Website.

My email last week urged you to get in touch with me directly (annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk) - I have to be honest and say how shocked and disappointed I was to read your review. There is nothing in the care that you describe that is acceptable. Nor would we would ever expect any of our patients to feel ignored on any of our wards. The concerns you raise about staffing, cleanliness, and breast feeding support are extremely serious and warrant immediate investigation.

I'm not sure if you are a nurse working in the system locally, but if you are, you will apprecate why we feel an urgent need to look into your experience and understand why it falls so far short of the standards we routinely expect.

Please work with us on this by getting in touch to share more information.

With many thanks,

Annie
