On Saturday afternoon 4th October I had an accident while cycling with friends. On hitting the deck I knew I had a serious injury and a friend called for an ambulance. The ambulance came from the local town of Beverley and arrived at the scene within 5 minutes. The crew were amazing and after getting me settled in the ambulance with some pain relief, whisked me off to Hull Royal. After hearing all the political rhetoric about treatment in hospitals on weekends, I knew I was about to test it myself. On arrival, the crew stretchered me into accident and emergency, where a busy crew of doctors and nurses quickly assessed me and sent me off for x-ray. Having identified the problem (neck of femur fracture) I was taken to a very busy trauma and orthopaedics ward (H90).
By 09.30 on Sunday morning, I had been assessed by a specialist and options for treatment discussed. By 18.00 I had been to surgery where the head of the femur was screwed back in place, and returned to Ward H90. While hospital is never a nice place to be, in my opinion, every part of the process, from being picked up by the ambulance crew, to being discharged was quick, very professional and to the highest standards. The staff at all levels were outstanding, and patient treatment superb. I am extremely grateful that we have an NHS with dedicated and caring professionals, and thank them all. Finally, like many of the agencies that impose standards that shift year on year, the CQC should be applauding the work carried out on a daily basis in our hosptals, and the Government should be proud of the service that the NHS provide.
