Dear Anonymous – I am sorry that your son had a long wait for his arm to be operated on and that this caused him so much discomfort and pain. Operations are only every cancelled as a last resort. But regrettably recent pressures arising from emergency admissions mean that on occasion it has been necessary to prioritise patient’s surgical procedures. You may have seen that this pressure on the NHS has been reported widely in the national and local news. Where necessary elective surgery (that is planned “routine” surgery) is postponed initially, and then emergency surgery cases are prioritised, with cancer cases being the last to be deferred. This often means difficult choices for staff as they would always wish to treat every patient as soon as possible. Your son would have been kept nil by mouth in the hope that the consultant was able to find a theatre slot for him and I am sorry if this was not fully explained to you at the time.

I hope that you son is now making a good recovery from his injuries.

Kind Regards – Steve Sykes
