"Fantastic care"

On the 22.1.2016 I attended the day case centre at the hallamshire hospital for a Re-do squint surgery. I am wanting to make you aware of how fantastic all of the staff were on this day and this is why.

I arrived and was signed in straight away the receptionist was lovely and spoke quietly to maintain confidentiality. I then waited to be called in by the nurse. Around 10 minutes after my Nurse came to collect me. They fully explained what was going to happen to my dad and reassured him I would be ok and gave him a contact number he could phone any time and also told him that the staff would also contact him.

I was then taken through into a room where I was asked health questions, I have had a lot of health problems in the past year and every single one was listened to and taken into account. One thing that gives me big concern is my vulnerability to seizures especially if my blood sugar drops even though I have not been diagnosed as diabetic, the nurse straight away took my blood sugar and this was monitored throughout the day especially when I did have a seizure in recovery.

I also have a very bad allergy to the medication Cyclizine again this was taken very seriously and all staff seemed very aware.

All my Obs were taken and the nurse brought me some Ted socks. The anaesthetist came to see me shortly after, where again they asked me questions and due to previous health problems all the correct precautions were taken during surgery. I was also able to have acupuncture due to my serious sickness after surgery.

The surgeon then came to see me, talking everything through with me again answering all my questions, despite the fact I have asked them all before they were still very happy to answer them. My assigned nurse then stayed with me right up until going into theatre.

I don't remember much from recovery but what I do remember is the nurses caring for me were very lovely and couldn't do enough for me.

I was then taken into my own room for the rest of the day. I slept a lot but I was aware that the staff were all popping their heads in to check on me and I would often wake to find teh nurse checking on me or seeing if I would like anything or they could help in any way.

The nurse informed me when they were finished and I was handed over to a Sister who was equally as lovely as were all of the nurses on the day care team. I suffered from sickness and dizziness really badly and so they monitored this closely and didn't rush me at all to go home. The sister monitored my blood sugar and found they had dropped low so ensured i was able to eat and drink to get them higher. The surgeon came to see me before they went home to see how I was and again discuss how I would feel over the next week.

The sister spent a lot of time discussing the discharge with both myself and my parents.

Providing me with reassurance and advice should I need any help or assistance once I had gone home.
