"Massive waits"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

My daughter was taken to A&E last night. My the time the ambulance crew got us did the hand over.

We for taken through to the paediatric section of A&E. She had to sit on hard plastic chair which she found really uncomfy due to back and hop pain. No pain relief was offered.

Over An hr later I asked how long the wait was.

By this time it was the early hrs. We were told it would be another 3-4 hrs at least if there were no emergencies.

There were only 3 children in this section and all the beds empty.

She moved to a bed in a side room after I asked if she can lie down as she was so uncomfy. The floor of the room was really dirty.

I fully understand emergencies happen and really don't have a problem with that. My daughter was in pain and no one seemed to bother.

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. The Matron is disappointed that the triage nurse did not offer your daughter any pain relief when you first visited the department as they are usually very good at doing this. We are also sorry that a space was not found for your daughter to lie down in view of her condition. The Matron will ask the Sister in charge of the department to discuss this with her staff and reinforce the importance of offering pain relief at triage. Sometimes, it is difficult for parents to understand why they are having to wait so long when the department does not appear to busy. This can be because there are other children who are not visible to the general public who are requiring intensive treatment or the doctors are busy with adult patients as we share some of the medical staff with adults.

We do ask our nurses to set expectations of what the wait might be and it would seem that this was done for you. If you would like to discuss this further with the Matron please contact her on 0118 322 7480.
