"Fantastic service at Derriford Royal Eye Infirmary Daycase Unit"

About: Royal Eye Infirmary / Ophthalmology

(as a relative),

I accompanied my 84 year old grandmother to the REI daycase unit for her cataract surgery last week. I was expecting to have to leave her whilst she was waiting for her surgery as this had been indicated on the appointment letter, however when we arrived the receptionist helped me to find a space for my grandmother's wheelchair and I did not feel at all pressured to leave. The registered nurse who booked my grandmother in was excellent with her and very patient. My grandmother was extremely anxious about the procedure and asked the nurse if I could stay with her until she went to theatre. The nurse agreed!

We did have a longish wait but the surgeon and nursing staff were very good at explaining why my grandmother needed to be moved down the theatre list and the healthcare assistants were excellent and kept checking both she and the other elderly unaccompanied patients were okay.

I was contacted immediately via a bleep provided by reception (available due to poor mobile signal within the hospital) as soon as my Grandma was out from recovery so I could sit in on her discharge with the nurse which again was explained very easy to her so she could understand!

I would just like to say that my grandmother is now looking forward to her other eye been operated on in the near future and was delighted with how everyone 'took care of her and were very nice'.

A huge thank you from me and congratulations on the great care provide by the REI team!
