"Lack of understanding"

About: Let’s Talk Well Being ( IAPT) – Nottingham

(as the patient),

I've had counselling which was ok and the counsellor was great, but then I was referred for CBT a few years ago, where I got a therapist I didn't like. I was threatened for discharge twice because I couldn't attend due to being ill. One of the times I couldn't attend was because the therapist said to come straight off of my medication, so I had nasty withdrawal symptoms as well as other health problems at the time. It was ok for them to take two weeks holidays at a time, though.

I've also recently found out that the therapist had an obsession with my weight, blaming my weight for my mental health problems when the person that referred me, a psychiatrist had already stated in a report that I had been abused at a young age and while growing. If the therapist had bothered to get to the root cause of my weight they would have found out that my mental health was the cause of it and so was the abuse I'd endured over the years. Sadly I was not able to complain because I hadn't found out what was said to my Dr until a week ago.

I then stupidly referred myself and saw another therapist, I initially asked for help with my noise anxiety, but they kept switching and saying I had social anxiety then tried to focus on that. After three sessions I felt no better off and felt I had wasted the sessions, as I had not had help with my initial request. I felt that the therapist also tried to blame my mental health onto my weight without knowing any of my history.

I believe that people like these should find out why people are over weight before assuming that's the cause of their mental health problems. People like this could make you feel an whole lot worse, firstly for assuming and secondly because they've not listened to you in the first place. I am truly disgusted by both therapists and won't be using the service again.

We are very sorry to hear about your experience with our service and would like the opportunity to investigate it further.

This is certainly not the standard of person centred care we wish to deliver. Furthermore the service takes these issues you have raised very seriously, and I would like to invite you to contact our service, to speak to one of the Team Leaders or myself, Ian Rigley, so we can understand your experience to see if we can help support you, and for the service to learn from your experience. Please contact the service on 01159 560888.

Regards

Ian Rigley

Update posted by Amathyst (the patient)

Thanks for your response Ian Rigley. I have spoken to PALS, but couldn't complain about the service because it has to be within 12 months.

Unfortunately I'm unable to call because of anxiety. I try and avoid the phone if I possibly can. Thank you for the offer.

Thank you for responding to my initial email. I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I would like to give you the opportunity to communicate with me or the service via email or letter so we can understand your experience, as you have indicated telephone calls is not your preferred method of communicating.

Would you be willing to contact our service, via email or letter, addressed to either the Team Leaders, Service Manager or myself, Ian Rigley. Please contact the service on the email address and postal address identified via the following link (the link is to the referral website as this has the most up to date contact details to contact our service other than telephoning).
