"Culm West Ward. The nurses all ..."

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford)

(as the patient),

What I liked

Culm West Ward. The nurses all did their best, despite being extremely busy, and were polite and helpful. The food was wonderful. The cleaners did a good job, although they didn't seem to have enough time to do every area every day, it was still acceptable.

What could be improved

More nurses and auxiliaries would have made their job so much easier, they were rushed off their feet most of the time, and bed-bound patients were sometimes left waiting, through no fault of the nurses.

Anything else?

The Matron was officious and unpleasant, they had no contact whatsoever with the patients. On the two occasions that I saw the Matron, they were rushing around the ward, stern-faced, collecting items in a yellow clinical waste bag (including patients' own possessions - they took my new stockings which were still in their bag, and had to replace them immediately with new ones at cost to the NHS) because they were so intent upon finding "contaminated" items with which to confront the nursing staff, including blankets which patients used when sitting in their chairs. This seemed like petty and spiteful management to me, and I wonder if they actually appreciated how good the staff were! Perhaps they should be asked to attend a "people management class" because they were sadly lacking in this skill. It seems a shame that the only person I could complain about was the person who was supposed to be in charge! I hope this comment is brought to their attention!
