"A Complete joke!"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

3 hours wait for an ambulance, 2 hours wait to see a doctor to then be told they were waiting for a bed on a ward and could give no indication of the waiting time. So after arriving at A&E at 4.45pm, my father was transferred to an Assessment Unit at 11.30pm to then be told he would be assessed by another doctor but this would be an approx. wait of another 2 hours!!

When we asked why another doctor had to see him as one had already seen him in A&E we were told that the staff in A&E don't care! To make things worse they also didn't have a pillow for my father, he had to use a blanket rolled up. We were told that they didn't have any pillows left and he would not get one until he was on a ward which would be the next day.

Days later on the ward, I checked my fathers notes to read that they had suspected a stroke. When I asked the nurse I was told it was a mistake as they scribbled it out!

My father was also waiting for a stomach scan for which he had to be nil by mouth, so for days he went without food, only for my mother to receive a letter at home detailing an appointment as a outpatient for later that month! So basically he has been starved for 3 days for no reason.

They hospital will be receiving a letter of complaint!!!

We would like to offer our apologies that your experience of care does not reflect the high standards of quality and excellence we strive for here at QE Gateshead.

We take these issues very seriously, and would very much like to discuss these with you and investigate your concerns further.

Please do contact our PALS (patient advice and liaison service) team on 0800 953 0667 or pals@ghnt.nhs.uk so that we can find out more about what happened in your father's case.
